Little More About Us.

A project exploring how design can respond to ecological challenges in urban water landscapes.

Our Story

What is Waternest?

Waternest is an ongoing design project focused on improving conditions for waterbirds in urban environments. It combines research, prototyping and field testing to develop practical interventions such as nesting structures and environmental tools.
The project works at the intersection of ecology, design and public space.

Who are we?

Moritz Scheffer

Moritz Scheffer is a Berlin-based industrial designer with a specialization in Systemic Design. His current master’s research focuses on the breeding behavior of waterbirds in urban environments and explores how systemic design approaches can contribute to more resilient aquatic ecosystems.

He initiated and led the university course “Waternest” at HTW Berlin, where interdisciplinary student teams developed and tested real-world interventions such as nesting structures and environmental tools. His work combines field research, prototyping and ecological analysis to translate complex environmental dynamics into tangible design strategies.
